Virgil Ray Koon, Sr.

Virgil "Ray" Koon, Sr., 90, formerly of Spartanburg died Tuesday, November 16, 2021, at his home after a period of declining health.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, November 24 at Floyds Greenlawn Chapel, Spartanburg SC, with Rev. Michael Murdoch officiating. His family will receive friends at Floyds Chapel the hour prior. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Spartanburg.

Ray was born July 23, 1931 in Newberry, SC, a son of the late James Edwin Koon, Sr. and Ida Mae Ringer Koon. In addition to his parents, Ray was preceded in death by six of his siblings. He was a veteran of the US Army serving over in Germany. After his release from service Ray worked many years for Bell South as a cable repairman.

Those left to cherish his memory include, his wife of 63 years, Frances Blackwelder Koon, his sons, Virgil Ray "Kip" Koon, Jr., James Fletcher Koon (Beth), David Thomas Koon, Sr., his daughter, Laura "Beth" Koon Lacy (Blair), 11 grandchildren; Brittany Ray (Robb), Jennifer Carruth (Clay), Bailey Lacy, Sarah Odom (Ryan), Hannah Koon, Audrey Koon, Matthew Koon, Megan Koon, David Thomas Koon, Jr., Zachary Ligon and Thomas Koon, 5 great-grandchildren; Brynn, Kellin, Clay, Sebastian and Sullivan, his sister, Martha Koon Brown and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.
