Rodney Barrie Helms, 81 of China Grove, formerly of Concord, died Sunday, November 14, 2021 at his home after a period of declining health.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at Whitley’s Funeral Chapel on Thursday, November 18 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Earl Bradshaw officiating.
Rodney was born July 15, 1940 in Cabarrus Co., a son of the late Robert William and Pearl Hollar Helms. He was a life-long area resident and graduate of Concord High School where he played football as a running back and played baseball in center field. He was of the Methodist faith. In earlier years, Rodney worked in the dye dept. of Cannon Mills Plant #6. Later he went to work for the Post Office in Concord where he worked for 26 years as a window clerk until he retired. Rodney loved to coach Little League Baseball and Pop Warner Football teams at the Boy’s Club in Concord. Rodney enjoyed watching and rooting for the Washington Nationals Baseball and Duke Basketball. He also loved staying at the beach.
In addition to his parents, Rodney was preceded in death by his special dog-Gabi. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Judi Adams Helms, his son, Jay Gregory Helms, and his daughter, Bari LeAnne Helms, all of China Grove, his 3 precious fur babies, Vegas, Allie and Little “S”, his sister, Judy Mullis (Nelson) of Mt. Pleasant, his brothers, Gary Helms (Marilyn) of Highpoint, Levoy Helms (Kay) of Concord and Darrell Helms of Charlotte.
