Phillip Scott Helms

Phillip Scott Helms 63, passed away at home on August 14, 2022.

Born January 7, 1959, he was the son of Phillip Payne Helms and Nettie Huffman Helms Stocks. He graduated from A.L Brown in 1977 and married his high school sweetheart Sheila Yates Helms on June 23, 1979. He was a member of Kannapolis Church Of God. In June of 1979 he went to work at the Smithsonian in Washington DC on a scholarship he had won. He started his taxidermy business when he returned home and was a self-employed taxidermist for 20 years. McKenzie Taxidermy Supply offered him a job in fall of 1995 and he started in January 1996. He was a Tech Rep for McKenzie’s and traveled all over the country doing shows for them. He also kept his taxidermy business at his home. Phil loved to hunt and fish and traveling with his family. His greatest accomplishment was being a father to Brooke and Nicolas and grandfather to 6 week old Kinsley Rae. Preceding him in death was his father Phil Payne Helms and Nettie Huffman Helms Stocks.

Survivors include his wife Sheila daughter Brooke Gullett  (Corbin), son Nicolas and granddaughter Kinsley Gullett. His sister Sabrina Hartley, nephew Trevor Hartley. Brother and sister-in-law Roger and DeShan Yates and many special cousins who he loved deeply. Special Uncle and Aunt Fred and Bettye Steen. 

The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 17, 2022 at Kannapolis West A Church of God. The funeral service will begin at 3:30 p.m. at the church with Rev. Dr. Greg Sloop officiating. Burial will immediately follow the service at Carolina Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Kannapolis West A Church of God Mission Fund, 2211W A Street, Kannapolis NC 28081.
