Mary "Ethel" (Wells) Wellmon

Mary “Ethel” Wells Wellmon, 94, of Landis, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, April 2, 2021.

Ethel’s funeral will be held at Whitley’s Funeral Chapel at 2:00 PM Tuesday, April 6 with Rev. Mike Austin officiating.  Entombment will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park in China Grove. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home the hour prior to the funeral.

Mary Ethel was born January 23, 1927 in South Point NC, a daughter of the late Lewis Franklin and Brite Eaker Wells. In addition to her parents, Ethel was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Coy Wellmon, her brother, Pinkney Wells, her sisters, Sue Kerley, Linda Underwood and Margaret Stackleather.

Ethel was a lifelong area resident and longtime member of Landis Baptist Church, faithfully listening to services on the radio when her health prevented her from attending in person. She worked as an overhauler in local Mills, retiring from Linn Mill in 1989. She was an avid sports fan, enjoying which ever seasonal team was on TV, especially the Atlanta Braves or watching her own children during school sporting events. She was their biggest fan. Ethel also enjoyed working her word search puzzles. Ethel was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister. She will be dearly missed.

Those remaining to cherish her memories include her son Larry Wellmon (Shelly) of Ft. Wayne IN, her 3 daughters; Freida Burton (Steve) of Humboldt, Az, Janice Teague (Timmy) of Kannapolis and Patricia Hildreth of Phoenix AZ; sister, Lois Daniels of Kannapolis; 7 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
