Mary Ellen (Hughes) Scott

Mary Ellen Hughes Scott, 85, of Locust and formerly of Kannapolis, went to her heavenly home on Sunday, February 19, 2023 after a period of declining health.

Mary was born on January 18, 1938 in Madison County, Georgia to the late Parker Harris Hughes and Mary Elise Wilson Hughes. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brother, LC Hughes and sister Betty Jo McCartney.

Mary was affectionately called “Ellie” by her dear husband and many other family members and friends. She spent her career in retail for 23 years.  She had a servant’s heart and later she helped care for her parents and others. She attended church her entire life and served in each one in various ways. She had a beautiful smile and sweet spirit that others often talked about.  

Those left to cherish her memory include her beloved husband of 65 years, Charles Roy Scott. In addition to her husband she is survived by her son Roger Scott(Terry), son Jeff Scott, daughter Tammy Littlejohn(Charlie) and grandchildren Blake Scott(Jenna), Daire Anthony(Rob), Josh Littlejohn(Sara) and Anna Jones(Bryce). She was also blessed with four beautiful great-grandchildren over the last 3 years Lucy, Langston, Eloise and Orianthi. She is also survived by her brother Wayne Hughes(Sandra) and sister Joyce Walden.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 22, 2023 at Whitley’s Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, February 23, 2023 at Shadybrook Baptist Church with Rev. Willie Rash officiating. Burial will immediately follow the service at Carolina Memorial Park.
