John Winford Browning, Jr.

John Winford Browning, Jr. born September 6, 1928 in Kannapolis, NC went to be with the Lord at age 92 on Thursday, July 22, 2021 at Novant Medical Center in Mint Hill following a period of declining health. John was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years Mary Jacqueline Hallman Browning, who died March 29, 2020; his parents, John Winford Browning, Sr. and Alma Ora Barts Browning; and his four older siblings, Curtis Lee Browning, Sr., Malinda Browning Hurley, Christine Browning Tyson, and Mildred Leona Browning Allen.

A graveside service will be held 4:00 P.M. Saturday, July 24, 2021 at Carolina Memorial Park conducted by Rev. Caitlin Lai, where he will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife. Military graveside rites will be performed by the Cabarrus County Honor Guard and the US Navy.

The family will receive friends at Whitley’s Funeral Home Saturday from 3:00 P.M. until the time of the graveside service.

Family members left to cherish his memory include a daughter, Bridget Browning McSwain and son-in-law Nelson Todd McSwain, granddaughter Lindsay Nicole McSwain, and grandson Cody Barrett McSwain and wife Micaela Fawn McSwain all of Mint Hill, NC. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.

He was a veteran of WWII proudly serving in the US Navy, and served on the USS Missouri.

John was employed in construction maintenance at Cannon Mills for 42 years. He was a member of North Kannapolis United Methodist Church.

John was an avid woodworker, making models of ships and planes and was a collector of all sorts and enjoyed photography.
