Jocelyn (Godfrey) Pope

Jocelyn Godfrey Pope, 96, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 25, 2023.   Jo was born on June 23, 1926, in Union County, North Carolina, to the late Lewis Claude and Nettie McManus Godfrey.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Rev. Gordon Pope, as well as her nine brothers and sisters and their spouses.  Jo is survived by her daughter Jo Lynn Holmes (Gene), three grandchildren, Kenneth Payne, Kayla Payne, and Kristina Payne, of Melbourne, Florida, and many nieces and nephews.

Jo supported her husband’s ministry at Odell Baptist Church, Concord; South China Grove Baptist Church, China Grove; Morven Baptist Church, Morven, and Oak Grove Baptist Church in Granite Falls.  After her husband’s retirement, she also retired and the couple returned “home” to Concord.

Jo was a charter member of Memorial Baptist Church in Kannapolis and was known for her laughter and her consistently positive outlook.

The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 pm Sunday, January 29th at Whitley’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis.  Funeral services will begin at 2:00 pm in the funeral home chapel, with the Reverend David Troutman and the Reverend Jason Barber officiating.  Burial will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park in China Grove.
