David Ray Oliver

David Ray Oliver, 71 of Kannapolis passed away Sunday, June 14, 2020 surrounded by his loving family after a long battle with cancer.

His funeral service will be held at 4:00 PM Wednesday, June 17, at Whitley’s Funeral Chapel with Rev. Dave Cash and Rev. Tracy Love officiating. Family will receive friends at Whitley’s Funeral Home from 2:00- 4:00 P.M prior to the funeral. 

David was born May 27, 1949 in Cabarrus County, the son of the late Ray Delton Oliver and Lucy Cromer Oliver. In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his sister, Peggy O. Tomlinson.

David was a graduate of A.L Brown H.S class of 1967. He played football, baseball, wrestling as well as marching band. Early in his life, David raced cars at local dirt tracks. Then as a mechanic he worked on various NASCAR teams, including Richard Petty, Hendrick Motorsport and Roush Racing. He helped on championship teams of Matt Kenseth and Kurt Busch. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time at the beach. David was a member of the Midway United Methodist Church.

Those left who will cherish his memory include wife of 34 years, Martha Mew Oliver, two daughters, Stacy Lunsford (Sonny) and Shelly Stamey, both of Mooresville; grandchildren, Kristi Brawley (Shawn), Kaylan Mariano (Michael), Hanna Stamey, and Austin Lunsford; and two great grandchildren Lawson and Macon Brawley as well as four beloved nieces and nephews.
