Stephen McThay Garmon, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on August 19, 2025, at the age of 76 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born on November 1, 1948, to Arow and Deemy Garmon, Stephen was raised in a humble, hardworking family. Guided by the faith of his Christian parents, he came to know Jesus at a very young age and carried a deep sense of the Holy Spirit throughout his life.
At 18 years old, he was drafted into the United States Army, honorably serving his country while stationed in Germany during the Vietnam era.
Upon returning home, Stephen married the love of his life, Cathy Jo Harkey, on August 5, 1973. Stephen’s greatest joy was his family. With Cathy, his cherished wife of 52 years, he raised four daughters: Angela (Cris) Uren, Carla (Anthony) Morgan, Stacy (Bubba) Rosenbaum, and Stephanie (Jonathan) Featherstone. He was a loving father and devoted provider.
Church was also an important part of his life where he served in many leadership roles including Sunday School teacher, president of the Wesleyan Men, serving on the local board of administration, and participating in mission work.
Founding his business Garmon’s Fabrication in 1988, he earned a reputation for integrity, hard work, and unmatched workmanship.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Arow and Deemy Garmon, and siblings Peggy Farlow, Barbara Copeland, and Phyllis Seymore.
He is survived by his wife Cathy; his four daughters, and twelve grandchildren: Alaina Uren, Julia Uren, Cameron Uren, Madison Morgan, Landon Morgan, Riley Rosenbaum, Reese Rosenbaum, Addison Robbins, Griffin Robbins, Archer Featherstone, Jadyn Featherstone, and Sadie Featherstone. Stephen cherished time spent with his grandchildren— fishing and taking trips to the beach and mountains. He is also survived by four siblings, Betty Keller, Jesse (Barbara) Garmon, Gary Garmon, and John (Debbie) Garmon.
Stephen’s faith, love for family, and legacy of hard work and integrity will live on in all who knew him. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in his memory to Samaritan’s Purse at samaritanspurse.org.
Stephen’s family will receive friends and relatives for visitation on Friday, August 22, 2025, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Whitley’s Funeral Home, 1748 Dale Earnhardt Blvd., Kannapolis, NC.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at 12:00 PM Noon at North Kannapolis Wesleyan Church, 314 W 12th St, Kannapolis, NC 28081 with Pastor Cris Uren, Pastor Jesse Garmon and Pastor Scott Wheeler officiating. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park, 1350 S Main St, China Grove, NC 28023.
