Severa Cortez Gutierrez, 58, of Kannapolis, went to be with her Lord and Savior on May 27, 2026.
Severa was born on February 11, 1968 in Mexico. She was a cherished daughter of Tomas Cortez and Angelina Gutierrez.
She was preceded in death by her siblings, Abundio Cortez, Marcelo Cortez, Fernando Cortez, Jose Cortez, Jesus Cortez, Ignacia Cortez, Margarito Corte.
Severa was a woman of great strength, faith, and compassion whose love touched countless lives. She had a lifelong love of music and enjoyed playing sports such as volleyball and basketball in her younger years. She was always willing to help others, especially by teaching people to read and write, and found great joy in encouraging those around her.
Severa was a devoted Christian, she loved attending church every chance she could and faithfully served the Lord throughout her life. She was known for her friendly personality, bright clothing, and gift for conversation, never meeting a stranger and always making others feel welcome. She loved the beach, enjoyed swimming, and treasured time spent with family.
She was a loving mother and grandmother who cared deeply for her family. Her beautiful handwriting reflected the care and attention she gave to everything she did. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Those left to cherish her memory include her beloved husband, Jose Barcenas; children, Jose A. Barcenas, Edgar A. Barcenas, Roxann M. Barcenas, Tomas Barcenas; grandchildren, Miley Barcenas, Adrian Barcenas, and Leah Barcenas; and daughter-in-law, Mayra Quintin.
The family will receive friends from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 13, 2026, at Whitley's Funeral Home in Kannapolis. A funeral service will follow at 1:00 p.m., with interment afterward at Carolina Memorial Park in Kannapolis.
