Samuel M. Shelby, Jr., age 71, of Indian Lake Estates, Florida, passed away peacefully on September 15, 2025. He was born on September 1, 1954, in Camden, New Jersey, and lived a life defined by hard work, devotion to those around him, and a deep passion for his craft.
Sam was married to his wife, Kara, with whom he shared many years of companionship. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Christine Franzen; his parents, Samuel Shelby, Sr. and Bertha Thornton; his younger brother, Paul Shelby; and his sister, Carolyn Tufail.
He is survived by his children: Rick Shelby, Karen Holub (Jason), and Melissa Golik (Duke); and by his stepchildren: Kayla Gifford (Miguel), Heather Gifford, Karissa Shelby, and Taryn Mann (Johnny). Sam was also the proud grandfather of 19 grandchildren and great-grandfather of 5 great-grandchildren, each of whom brought him immense pride and joy. He is also survived by his sisters, Penny Warner (Jim) and Frances Minnie (Will), and his uncle, John Shelby (Sue).
Sam dedicated his professional life to the pipeline industry, where he was known as a true pipeliner through and through. As an outstanding chief inspector, his commitment to safety on the job was unmatched. He was respected not only for his expertise but also for his integrity, leadership, and mentorship. One of his greatest hopes was to pass along his knowledge to the next generation of pipeliners, ensuring that the standards he valued would live on.
Friends and colleagues alike will remember Sam for living life to the fullest. He had a larger-than-life presence, enjoyed laughter and good company, and often found joy in the simple pleasures of smoking a fine cigar and sipping a glass of scotch. His work ethic, sense of humor, and ability to bring people together remain a source of inspiration to all who knew him.
A celebration of Sam’s life will be held at a later date, with services planned in both Texas and Florida. Details will be provided once arrangements are finalized. Family and friends are invited to gather, share stories, and honor his memory in a way he would have appreciated—sharing laughter, smoking cigars, and sipping scotch together.
