Obituary: CONCORD - Roy Daniel Boone, 91, of Kannapolis, North Carolina died on Saturday, February 8, 2014, at Morningside Assisted Living in Concord, North Carolina. Mr. Boone was born in 1922 and was one of 10 children born to the late Luther Leonard Boone and Lura Docie Womble Boone in Chatham County, North Carolina. Mr. Boone was preceded in death by his loving wife of 67 years, Daisey Ruth Nash Boone, in 2010 and his son-in-law Kenneth Ray Moore, in 2010. He is survived by a brother, Billy Tew Boone, of Rockingham, NC; a daughter, Jo Boone Moore, of Thomasville, NC; a son, Dan Boone, and wife, Teena, of Concord, NC; 4 grandchildren, Brandon Moore, and wife, Shannon, of Thomasville, NC; Keena Moore Teague, and husband, David, of Apex, NC; Josh Boone, of Arlington, VA; Graham Boone, of Washington, DC. Mr. Boone is also survived by two great-grandsons, Philip and Ethan Teague, of Apex, NC. Mr. Boone proudly served his country in World War II as a First Lieutenant in the Army Air Force, serving from 1943-1945. He flew 35 combat missions as a B-29 Navigator in the 58th Bomb Wing, the first unit to introduce the B-29 Superfortress to combat in the Asiatic Pacific Theater of World War II. Mr. Boone was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross on two occasions for "heroism or extraordinary achievement while participating in an aerial flight", earned 4 Air Medals and was awarded 6 Battle Stars during his military service, then was honorably discharged in 1945. Following his military service, Mr. Boone graduated from Catawba College in 1948 and then pursued a teaching career, often saying that "he never worked a day in his life" because of the love he had in being a teacher. He taught History, Government, Economics and English at A. L. Brown High School in Kannapolis, NC for over 30 years and, in 1960, was awarded the Valley Forge Classroom Teachers Medal. Many may remember Mr. Boone as the "Voice of the Wonders", being the public address announcer at all A.L. Brown football, basketball and wrestling events for 27 years. After ending his teaching career, he enjoyed many years of retirement with his wife, Daisey. Mr. Boone's faith and his family were priorities in his life. He was a very active member of Jackson Park United Methodist Church in Kannapolis, NC, for all but the last few years of his life, teaching the Dan Boone Men's Sunday School Class for over 40 years. Mr. Boone especially enjoyed being a part of his grandchildren's life as they grew up and he actively followed their involvement in school and sports events. The family will receive friends on Sunday, February 16 from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM at Jackson Park United Methodist Church, 715 Mable Avenue, Kannapolis, NC 28083, where a service to celebrate his life and his service to his Lord will be held at 3:30 PM following the receiving. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park with military rites by the Cabarrus Veterans Honor Guard. The family would like to express their gratitude to the management and staff of Morningside Assisted Living in Concord, Hospice and Palliative Care of Cabarrus County, Senior Helpers of Concord and Crescent Heights Retirement Center of Concord and to Dr. David McMurry and to Dr. James Wall, for the wonderful care provided to Mr. Boone during his last years.
