Reverend Ronald Cooper, 90, was called home to his Lord and Savior on Friday, August 23, 2025. He was born on August 17, 1935, to the late Dewey and Flora Smith Cooper in Cabarrus County, NC.
Ronnie married the love of his life, Elizabeth Jean McConnell, on July 5, 1958, after they had met in Cannon Mills; where they both worked. Three years later, their son, Tony was born on July 4, 1961. In 1969, Ronald started his own construction company.
In 1979, the Lord called on Ronnie to preach. Preacher Ronnie was ordained in 1980. He believes his life really started at this time. Preacher Ronnie preached at several Churches in Kannapolis; Community FWB, Ben Avenue FWB and Independence Square FWB where he retired in March of 2015.
Preacher Ronnie would love to talk about the Lord, the Bible and fishing, rather than eat when he was hungry. He never missed church for anything. He was the most faithful person you would have met. His nieces and nephews would tell you he was a source of counsel, knowledge, wisdom, humility, and safety. He would give you the Godliest hug you’ve ever had. He was the most humble man you would meet, one of a kind. Preacher Ronnie had a presence about him that was most like the light of the spirit. To his son, he was his hero, Buddy, Pal, Best Friend, Super Pop.
Those to cherish his memory include his son, Tony (Becky) Cooper; two grandchildren, Kelly Cooper and Andi Cooper Newton (Weston); two great grandchildren, Peyton and Avery Newton; one sister, Sharon O’Kelly; one brother, Steve Cooper (Becky); nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Jean Cooper, in 2005; his parents and three siblings, Larry Cooper, Brenda Eudy (Ronnie) and Diane Winecoff (David).
Preacher Ronnie’s family will receive friends and relatives for visitation on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Whitley’s Funeral Home, 1748 Dale Earnhardt Blvd., Kannapolis, NC.
The funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 28, 2025, at 2:00 PM in Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Leonard Ewing and Pastor Steven Willis officiating. Burial will follow in Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis, NC.
