MILDRED JEANNETTE WAGONER BARBEE
JULY 2, 1932 - JUNE 22, 2026
Mildred Wagoner Barbee passed from her earthly home to her heavenly
home on June 22, 2026, after enjoying a blessed life of 93 years and 348
days. She was born in Kannapolis at 206 “D” Street, and loved to tell the
story of being born just as the 7:00AM mill whistle sounded on July 2,
1932.
As the beloved daughter of Merrell Tokyo Wagoner and Pearl Gordon
Wagoner, she went forth to build a loving family with her husband, Foy
Clifford Barbee. In addition to her parents and her husband, she had other
family members who have preceded her in death. Her son, Foy Lynn
Barbee, son in law, Randy Lynn Brooks, and her only sibling, Wayne Otto
Wagoner.
She was employed by the Cabarrus County Tax Assessor’s Office until her
retirement. During her long life, she remained dedicated to her family and
to Shadybrook Baptist Church. She taught many ages in Sunday School,
and gladly served in education and outreach ministries. Her most recent
passion being the food pantry there, where she served until she was no
longer able.
After the loss of her young husband in1960, Mildred showed the ultimate
courage and strength as she carried on to raise their children. Those left to
treasure their memories of a most loving mother are two daughters,
Brenda Barbee Tate (Tony), and Nancy Barbee Brooks. Those left to
cherish their memories of a fun-loving and caring “Mamaw” are her six
grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren. Mildred loved to tell
everyone this: “I doubled my pleasure in life, I had three children, six
grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren.” Leia Hooker (Scott),
Aubrey, Addie, and Brendan, Jason Tate (Amanda), Jax, Sam, and
Madden, Lindsay LeZotte (Matt), Lucy, Alice, and Tate, Jaime Brooks, Sara
Brooks (Louis), Benjamin Brooks (Stephanie), Elliott, Grace, and Emma.
Mildred will be remembered as a special “Aunt Tootie” by many nieces and
nephews. She will be especially missed by her neighbors, Carl and Sonya,
as well as other close neighbors and friends.
Instead of a funeral service or visitation time, we will be respecting
Mildred’s wishes for a private family gathering at the graveside which is
planned for her 94th birthday, July 2nd, at 11:00AM, at Carolina Memorial
Park. While we will welcome anyone who loved her, we kindly ask that
those not in attendance will join with us in spirit and in prayer.
