Mayra N. Young

Mayra N. Young, 77, of Kannapolis, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on July 17, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.

Born on May 16, 1948, in Cayey, Puerto Rico. Mayra brought with her the vibrant warmth and enduring values of her Puerto Rican heritage. She eventually made her home in Kannapolis, North Carolina where she built a life centered on faith, family, and love.

Mayra was an active member of Cabarrus Newcomers and Friends. She was a dedicated volunteer with CVAN (Cabarrus Victims Assistance Network), offering her time and compassion to those in need. She lived life to the fullest, staying socially and physically active through activities. Mayra loved playing Crazy Bridge and Bunko, participating in book clubs, enjoying programs and exercise classes at the local senior center, and attending Broadway shows with her daughter.

She was deeply devoted to her family and friends. Her love and care for them were evident in all she did. Her presence was a source of strength, laughter, and comfort. Marya built lasting relationships that enriched the lives of her family and friends.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 54 years, Kenneth G. Young; her daughter, Karen Young-Burleson and husband Bradley Burleson; her son, Kenneth C. Young; her beloved sisters, Adaljisa Basinger and Delma Heileman with husband Michael Heileman; and a cherished extended family of brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members, and dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lorenzo and Rosa Ruiz; her brother, Osvaldo Ruiz; and brothers-in-law, Carl Basinger and Caroll Barger.

Mayra’s legacy of kindness, strength, and joyful spirit will continue to live on in all who knew and loved her.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to CVAN (Cabarrus Victims Assistance Network) in Mayra’s memory by supporting a cause she deeply cared about.

Her final resting place will be at Salisbury National Cemetery Annex, with interment details to be determined at a later date. A Celebration of Life will be held in Kannapolis, North Carolina, and in Cincinnati, Ohio, with dates and times to be announced.
