Max Carson McKinney, 89, of Landis went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, December 7, 2023, from Atrium Health Cabarrus in Concord, after a period of declining health.

A funeral will be held to celebrate Max’s life at 3:00 PM Sunday, Dec. 10 at Landis Baptist Church with Rev. Mike Austin officiating. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. His family will receive friends at the church from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM prior to the funeral.

Max was born July 15, 1934, in Cabarrus Co., the son of the late Claude W. and Carrie Rogers McKinney. In addition to his parents, Max was preceded in death by a sister Joyce McKinney Deal.

Max was a lifelong area resident and longtime active member of Landis Baptist Church. He was a member of the first graduating Class at A. L. Brown High School. He then joined the US Army during the Korean War, being stationed in Germany as an M.P. He worked for several years in Charlotte as a riveter at the Douglas Aircraft missile plant. He is best remembered as the NAPA guy, working at and later managing several locations in Cabarrus and Rowan Co. for 31 years until he retired. He then went to work for Whitley’s Funeral Home for 21 more years of faithful service to our community and then retired again.

He will be remembered for making Sundrop pound cakes for his church family and friends as well as making fudge on a weekly basis. He loved to go on cruises and travel on Christian Tours with Sybil and friends. He loved the Lord and loved and supported his church, Landis Baptist. He was a devoted family man. His wife, daughter, son-in-law, grandchildren and sisters meant the world to him. Max was a real character. He was always swapping real-life stories. He will be dearly missed by those who knew him.

Those who remain to cherish his memories include the love of his life Sybil Edwards McKinney whom he married June 6, 1958, his daughter, Crystal McKinney Moore (Jimmy) of Landis, his grandson Seth Carson Moore (Valerie) of Kannapolis, His granddaughter, McKinney Kate Moore Bullard (Tyler) of China Grove his great-grandson Brice Bullard and his sisters, Martha Elaine Elms of Monroe and Carol Jean McFarland of Kannapolis.
