Martha Jean Carter Metcalf, 90, of Kannapolis, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 25, 2023.
Martha was born on April 17, 1933 in Cabarrus County. She was a cherished daughter of the late William Lester Carter and Corrie Hampton Carter. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Charles Barringer and second husband, Roland L. Metcalf; brother, Harry Carter and sister-in-law, Elizabeth Carter.
Martha was a remarkable individual whose life was marked by dedication, love, and a profound commitment to her family and her work. For four decades, she was a devoted employee of Cannon Mills. She spent an impressive 40 years of her life working diligently, with a special distinction for working 3rd shift for 25 years.
Outside of her professional life, Martha had an extraordinary gift for caring for others. She faithfully looked after and supported her two husbands and long-time companion, embodying the true meaning of love and devotion. Her kindness, compassion, and selflessness touched the hearts of everyone fortunate enough to know her.
Growing up Martha was a member of Center View Baptist Church. After getting married she and her husband became members of Center Grove Lutheran Church.
Martha enjoyed getting together with her classmates once a month. She was the last class of J.W Cannon High School, the class of 1951. She also had a passion for bird watching and enjoying her granddogs which was a source of joy and serenity.
Those left to cherish her memory include her sons, Luther Barringer (Debbie) and Gary Barringer (Lisa); long time companion, Harold Cline; grandchildren, Janet Wepner (John), Amy Hilton (Dwight), Andrew Barringer (Ashley), Amanda Maass (Nick), Jonathan Barringer (Mikayla), Katherine Whitsett (C.J) and Christopher Barringer; she was also blessed with 5 great-grandchildren, soon to be 6 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 1:00- 2:00 pm Saturday, September 30, 2023 at Whitley’s Funeral Home in Kannapolis. A memorial Service will begin at 2:00 pm in the chapel with Rev. Stout officiating. Inurnment will immediately follow at Center Grove Lutheran Church Cemetery in Kannapolis.
