Jerry Glenn Benson, 80, of Mooresville, North Carolina, went to his eternal home with Jesus on September 1, 2025. Jerry was a Born-Again Believer in Christ and followed Jesus the best he could.
Born in Cabarrus County, Jerry was raised by his mother, Mary Cook, and grew up with his three brothers. As Jerry often said, “he let the school know how to do it” and dropped out of high school to work in Cannon Mills. Jerry loved to work. In a short few years, Jerry would find the love of his life, Linda, and get married within 5 months. After only two weeks of marriage, Jerry was drafted into the United States Army, where he rose to the rank of Specialist and served his time in Germany. After discharging from the Army, Jerry built a life with his family, having born three kids, Angela, Scott, and Julie.
However, during these early years of their childhood, their Daddy was keen on drinking. Linda, his wife, would be saved by God’s grace, and she and her church prayed for months that Jerry would be saved. One day, while resting at home getting ready for the third shift to start, Jerry turned on the radio and heard Oliver B. Greene preaching his testimony. Preacher Oliver had been a drunk as well, and even had times when he was thrown into a ditch. But he heard the gospel and got saved. Jerry, with a convicted heart, said, “If that man, being a preacher, could get saved from being a drunk, then God can do the same for me.” Jerry knelt by his bed and trusted Jesus Christ as his Savior. Jerry, at 37 years old, immediately began serving the Lord who saved him.
Jerry gave his all to Jesus. Jerry would be a deacon, Sunday school teacher, cleaner, cook, choir director, and much more. As he said, “I did just about everything but preach.” Jerry grew up playing guitar and would use this talent for the Lord. He founded a bluegrass gospel group called One Accord, which would travel the South and play gospel music in churches. Some of his favorite memories were the opportunities to serve in churches with the simple strum of the guitar. Jerry also loved his work and work family at Alexander Country Ham.
Jerry is preceded in death by his parents, Mary Virginia Jordan and Bob Glenn Benson, his brothers Bobby Benson, John Benson, and his infant brother Rickey Jordan.
Jerry is survived by his much beloved wife of 57 years, Linda Stewart Benson, his three children, Angela (Trey) Benson Martin, Scott Benson, and Julie (Joshua) Benson Davis, his brother Timothy Jordan, and his grandchildren Chandler and Landon Martin, and Jakob and Kaylee Davis, nieces, nephews, as well as innumerable friends who he loved and served.
A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at Piedmont Baptist Church, 5870 Wright Road, Kannapolis, NC, 28081. Friends for Visitation will be received from 11 AM to 12 PM. The Service will follow from 12 PM to 1 PM, with Jakob Davis and Rev. Michael Edwards officiating. The Burial will follow the service at Iredell Memorial Gardens.
