James David Petrea, 35, of Mooresville, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, March 25, 2026.

James was born on April 22, 1990, in Cabarrus County. He was a cherished son of John Petrea and Teresa Sawyer Miller. James was preceded in death by his son, Chevy James Petrea.

James had a deep passion for music. He loved playing the guitar, and writing songs.

At the center of his life was his family. James was a devoted husband and father who cherished his wife and children above all else. He wanted nothing more than to spend his time with them. James’ love for his family was immeasurable and unwavering.

James was the kind of person who never met a stranger. With a generous heart, he was always ready to help anyone in need. A talented handyman, James could fix just about anything, and he was always willing to help anyone. He was also a great listener; someone people could turn to for comfort and support. James always had a quick wit and wonderful sense of humor. He had a way of making people laugh. Strong-willed and determined, once James made up his mind, nothing could stand in his way.

Though he will be deeply missed, his family finds comfort in knowing he has been reunited in heaven with his son, Chevy.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife, Kristina Keating Petrea; son, Harlan Maks Petrea; daughter, Salem Jade Petrea; parents, Teresa and Paul Miller and John Petrea; sister, Brittany Starnes; brother, Zachary Petrea (Lindsey) and Matthew Petrea (Mikayla); and paternal grandfather, JD Petrea.

The family will receive friends from 6:00pm to 8:00pm on Monday, March 30, 2026 at Whitley’s Funeral Home in Kannapolis. The funeral service will be at 1:00pm on Tuesday, March 31, 2026 at Charity Baptist in Kannapolis. Interment will be at Carolina Memorial Park.
