James Franklin Day, Sr.

April 6, 1933 — January 13, 2024

Kannapolis

Kannapolis, NC - James Franklin Day, Sr., a proud Navy Korean War Veteran and lifelong resident of Kannapolis, passed away on January 13, 2024, peacefully at home, holding his daughter's hand to meet loved ones waiting for him in his eternal home. Born in Charlotte, NC, on April 6, 1933 (April 5, 1933, according to his mother), he often celebrated both dates in the spirit of his motto, "Always both." A mantra that mirrored the complexity and beauty of life, encapsulating Poppy's wisdom in two simple words.

James attended Winecoff School in Kannapolis from elementary to high school. His diverse career included roles at Duke Power, Cannon Mills, Chicken Boxette, Stonewall Florist, Colonial Bakery, Jack's Cookies, and Fabtech. But James was more than just a hardworking man; he was a storyteller at heart, always eager to share his firsthand accounts of local history and his experiences while serving in the Navy on the USS Waldron, based in Norfolk, VA. He was a proud Boy Scout, earning his Eagle Scout at 15 to achieve the record of the youngest in North Carolina. James was known for his love of life, resilience, and ability to take life as it comes. An avid reader passionate about history and travel, he enjoyed impromptu trips from the beach to the mountains and traveled worldwide during his military service. James was known for his love of sustainable living, weather, navigation, family, and cowboy movies. As a child and teenager, he watched movies and ran the camera at the Gem Theater to meet several actors after their on-stage performances. A skilled flea market salesman, he had a talent for finding treasures and sharing a good joke.

James, affectionately known as "Poppy," became a living landmark – a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He leaves behind a tapestry of memories, stories, and an enduring presence. "Best Not to Count" is a simple yet profound piece of advice reflecting his philosophy of taking life as it comes and not getting bogged down by the past. It is a testament to his resilience and ability to gracefully navigate the twists and turns of life.

In a world that often rushes by, it's comforting to know the love and connection we share with him is crystal clear—not just in these moments of saying "see you later" but in the everyday laughter, shared stories, and the little things he did. As a family, we would cruise around Charlotte and Kannapolis, as he would share with us the best routes and throw in some stories for good measure; he wasn't just our guide by the roads but by the memories that made them unique.

James was also a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Jane Marlene Day (Sullivan), and his parents, Roy Elmo Day and Minnie Lee Day (Pruitt), and Roy Algernon Day, his brother. He is survived by his brother Robert Day, his children James Franklin Day, Jr., and Jennifer Morrow Day-McCoy (Andy McCoy, husband), and his grandchildren Hannah Elizabeth Pauley (Kaleb Shulda, significant other), Emily Ruth Pauley (Davide Traettino, significant other), and Jason Bradley Williams (Brandy Williams, wife), nieces and nephews.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew him personally or in legendary tales shared by his family with their beloved friends and family. A private funeral service for immediate family members will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Hospice & Palliative and Meals on Wheels, both serving Cabarrus County, in his memory.

The family would like to thank the professional caregivers of Always Caring, neighbors, friends, and dear family members for their compassion in supporting him in fulfilling his wish to live in his home.
