James Edward Campbell, 90, of Kannapolis, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 3, 2026 at his home.

James was born on November 27, 1935, in Haywood County, NC. He was the cherished son of the late Hiram Campbell and Sarah Justice Campbell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 54 years, Marlene J. Campbell; and his daughter, Patrice Ann Campbell Simmons.

A proud Army veteran, James, continued serving others throughout his life, including donating more than 18 gallons of blood. He had a lifelong passion for aviation, loved commercial flying, and was a proud private pilot.

James worked for IBM for 38 years and was known for his dedication and technical skill. A natural problem-solver, he loved computers, ham radio, genealogy, and was always working on a project. He also achieved his contractor’s license, reflecting his drive to keep learning.

Faith was central to his life. He loved attending church and was very active in it. James was a caring man who will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughters, Susan Aileen Campbell and Cindy Jane Campbell; sister, Nancy Campbell Bowlin (Charles); grandchildren, Taylor Nicole Griffin, Leah Skye Griffin, Brooks Griffin, River Simmons, and RuthAnn Campbell Galanti; James was also blessed with two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm Saturday, February 7, 2026, at Whitley’s Funeral Home in Kannapolis.
