Guy "Tony" Mitchell Benfield

Guy “Tony” Mitchell Benfield, 68, of China Grove passed away Saturday, September 27, 2025, at Atrium Health Cabarrus.

He was born October 17, 1956, in Cabarrus Co. to the late Clyde Mitchell Benfield and Doris Elaine Lunsford Benfield.

In earlier years, Tony spent time outdoors fishing, deer hunting, horseback riding, and raising Serama chickens. He loved cats, vegetable gardening, and roses. As a former brick mason, he constructed beautiful brick and slate sidewalks for his mother’s yard. Tony was an artist who painted on canvases, saw blades, wood, etc. Throughout his life, he tried to assist people facing difficulties, even when he was facing his own trials. He followed the Christian faith and expressed readiness for the end of life when it came. Tony is remembered as a generous man with a heart of gold who was loved by many.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Phyllis Brosh.

Those left to cherish his memory are his sister, Cathy Matthews (Ronny); nephew, Mark Lefler (Melissa); grand nephew, Sonny Lefler; and grand nieces, Lexi, and Taylor Lefler.

A heartfelt “thank you” to his Aunt Joyce Bonds for always “being there” and for her unwavering thoughtfulness. The family would also like to express their sincere appreciation to his medical team at Atrium Health Cabarrus.

A memorial service is being planned. Updates of date and time will be announced soon. Burial will be at Salisbury National Cemetery with Military Honors.
