Fred Franklin Steen Sr. 92, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 30th, 2024, at Morningside of Concord.
He was born November 29th, 1931, in Anson County to the late James Frank Steen and Bessie Clanton Steen.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Bettye Huffman Steen and his five brothers Ralph, Harry, Buise, Grady, and Guy Steen, his two sisters, Lillian and Rachel.
Fred was a Veteran serving in the U.S Navy as an aviation mechanic. He was a Landis High School graduate and obtained his bachelor’s degree in History from UNC Charlotte. He was a public-school teacher for many years which included Hidden Valley Elementary, Stonewall Jackson Training School and Northwest Cabarrus Middle School.
Fred enjoyed his tenure as a supervisor at Plant One in Cannon Mills during the 80’s and 90’s prior to his retirement. He was a member and past Master at Cannon Memorial Masonic Lodge, a member of the American Legion and a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. He served his church as a Deacon and a Sunday School Teacher for First Baptist Church in Kannapolis.
He enjoyed traveling the USA with his wife, Bettye, with many other friends, neighbors and family members. Fred enjoyed celebrating holidays with family especially Christmas and the Fourth of July. The Steen Family Christmas Day dinner tradition began at his home in 1982 where family and friends would gather to hear him tell tales and sing Hank Williams’ Tennessee Border song. He celebrated the Fourth of July at Grady Steen’s home on Lake Norman each year with his brothers and many other Steen’s family and friends. Fred was very patriotic and enjoyed all the celebrations honoring our country.
Those left to cherish his memory are his sons Fred Steen ll (Tena) of China Grove and Brad Steen (Wendy) of Rockwell. His three grandchildren Blake Steen (Shannon) of Kannapolis, Blair Steen Honeycutt (Dwight) of China Grove, and Drew Steen of Rockwell, three great grandchildren, Tristan, Braden and Landon. Fred had many loving nieces and nephews who loved and cherished him.
Fred loved his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and led a full life of kindness to his fellow man.
Funeral service will be held at First Baptist Church of Kannapolis with Rev Mark Hill officiating, Friday, July 5th, at 11 a.m. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the church. Interment will be held in Salisbury National Cemetery Annex on Friday July 19, 2024, at 10:00 AM.
The family would like to acknowledge the great care and comfort given by the staff at Morningside during his declining health this year. The family request that any memorials be sent to First Baptist Church, 101 N. Main Street, Kannapolis, NC 28081.
