Fred Helms Jr., 98, of Kannapolis, peacefully passed away on February 10, 2026, at his home.
Born on October 15, 1927, in Cabarrus County to the late Fred O. Helms Sr. and Arabelle Byrd Helms, Fred lived a life marked by dedication and service. A proud World War II veteran, he served his country in the U.S. Army, subsequently working at Cannon Mills power plant as a supervisor.
Fred was a devoted member of Bethpage Presbyterian Church, where he actively participated with the Boy Scouts Troops 105 and 36 from First Presbyterian Church. His contributions to the church included serving as an elder, Assistant Sunday School teacher, and engaging in various church activities, leading to recognition for his many years of service. Additionally, he was a member of VFW #8989 and The American Legion #115. Outside of his community involvement, Fred enjoyed hunting, fishing, and was an enthusiastic fan of the Braves and Carolina Tar Heels. Known affectionately by his CB radio handle “Wagon Master,” he cherished the camaraderie of fellow CB enthusiasts. Most importantly, he was a loving father and grandfather, whose presence will be greatly missed.
Fred was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Helen Cartner Helms, in 2009, and a granddaughter, Emma Peeler.
He is survived by his daughter, Linda Helms Linn (Walter), son, Richard Alan Helms (Pauline), four grandchildren Charlotte Willard (preceded by Jimmy Willard), Steven Farmer (Kristen) Cheryl H. Peeler, and Brian Alan Helms, along with nine great-grandchildren: Zach and Bailey Willard, Laci Peeler, Gracyn Little, Logan, Cayden, Cassidy, Cailyn, and Caison Farmer. He is also remembered by lifelong family member, Anita Huie.
A funeral service honoring Fred's life will take place on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Bethpage Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Ellen Campbell Gardner officiating. Military rites will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
Visitation will be held on Monday, February 16, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Whitley’s Funeral Home.
The Helms family wishes to express heartfelt gratitude to Gina, Alan, and Maurita of VIA Hospice for their compassionate care for Fred; you have been like family.
