Obituary

Doug Langley passed peacefully in his sleep on July 9, 2026, with his family close by. Doug was born to Alfred and Carrie Batson Langley on July 30 or 31, 1938, in Greenville, SC. No one is sure which date is correct, as the family Bible and birth certificates do not match. This story brought the family much joy and laughter through the years.

Growing up in Greenville, SC, Doug enjoyed woodworking, working with his hands, and fast cars. Doug found out early that school was not his strength and began working at a local Winn-Dixie. During this time, Doug started dating a beautiful young lady named Nan Hill. They fell in love and married in June of 1960.

Shortly after, Doug started working at John D. Hollingsworth on Wheels out of Greenville, SC. He started in the machine room and was promoted to a mobile man, which put him on the road traveling to textile mills across the United States and Canada. After several years of traveling, he became the “go-to” service technician for the Cannon Mills Company in Kannapolis, NC. After a direct request of Cannon Mills’ leaders to get Doug closer to them, Hollingsworth moved the family to Kannapolis in 1970. Doug built lasting relationships across the company, proudly building and representing the Hollingsworth brand in the Kannapolis area.

In Kannapolis, Doug and Nan built a wonderful life and raised three children. They were dedicated to supporting their children in all their endeavors at Enochville, Odell, and Northwest Cabarrus schools. If there was a ballgame or a band concert, Doug could be found cheering in the stands or on the sidelines. He worked the concession stand, sold tickets, ran the chains on the field, and ran the scoreboard. Later in life, Doug supported his grandchildren, Britney, Alexandria, Maggie, Maddox, and Rhylann by attending many football, baseball, and softball games, cheer, and band events.

Doug attended First Baptist Church in Kannapolis for many years and later joined Parkwood Baptist Church in Kannapolis.

Funeral services are being handled by Whitley’s Funeral Home. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. followed by the Funeral at 11:00 a.m. on Friday July 17, at Whitley’s Funeral Home, 1748 Dale Earnhardt Blvd, Kannapolis, NC. Reverend Mike Waters of Parkwood Baptist Church is officiating. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.

Doug is survived by his wife of 66 years, Nan Gayle Langley of Kannapolis, NC, and three children Tim (Terri) of Mary Esther, FL, Vivian (Chip) of Mebane, NC, and David (Jennifer) of Kannapolis, NC. He is also survived by his five grandchildren, Britney (Matt) of Fleming Island, FL, Alexandria (Lindsay) of Salt Lake City, UT, Maggie of Charlotte, NC, Maddox and Rhylann of Kannapolis, NC, and three great grandchildren, Reagan, Rory, and Brady.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Crescent Heights Community of Concord, the amazing care team at Graceful Homecare, and the nursing team at Atrium Health Hospital and Palliative Care Cabarrus. These agencies provided Doug great joy and outstanding care the past year and a half.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial contributions be made in Doug’s name to Atrium Health Hospice and Palliative Care Cabarrus (5003 Hospice Lane, Kannapolis, NC 28081). Condolences can be shared online at www.whitleysfuneralhome.com.
