Curtis Michael Ballard

Curtis Michael "Mike" Ballard, 73, of Kannapolis, North Carolina, passed away unexpectedly on August 6, 2026.

Born in Cabarrus County, Mike was a lifelong resident of the area and a proud member of the Kannapolis community. He graduated from A.L. Brown High School in 1971 and continued his education at Nashville Auto Diesel College in 1973. Mike dedicated 40 years of faithful service to Duke Energy, where he worked as a Science Technician. His strong work ethic, reliability, and commitment earned the respect of his coworkers throughout his career.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Curtis Leon Ballard and Mae Evelyn Jordan Ballard, and by his beloved son, Steven Michael Ballard.

Mike found great joy in researching his family’s ancestry and preserving the stories and connections that brought generations together. He loved fishing, spending time with his family, listening to music—especially the hits of the 1980s—and playing BINGO, where there was nothing quite like the excitement of calling out “BINGO!” Above all, Mike treasured making memories with the people he loved. Those who knew him will remember his quiet strength, kind heart, and the genuine love and devotion he had for his family.

He is lovingly remembered by his daughter, Shelley Ballard Lanham of Kannapolis; his cherished grandchildren, Karah Michele Lanham, Devon Michael Upright (Patience), and Alexa Grace Ballard Poplaski; his sister, Lisa White (Mark) of China Grove; his nieces, Christy Crowell (Greg) and Julia Walter; and his great-nephews, Nathan Nowak, Madyx Nowak, Spencer Walter, and Graham Walter. He also leaves behind many extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly.

The family will receive friends during a visitation on Saturday, August 15, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Whitley's Funeral Home, 1748 Dale Earnhardt Boulevard, Kannapolis, NC 28083. A Celebration of Life service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mike's life was one of dedication to his family, his work, and the things he loved most. His memory will continue to live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mike Ballard Memorial Fund. Your kindness and generosity during this difficult time mean more to our family than words can express and will help us honor Mike’s life and the lasting impact he had on those who knew and loved him.
