Bernice Jean Thomas, 95, passed away on August 29, 2026. Born on March 18, 1931, she lived a life marked by warmth, generosity, and a spirited personality that left a lasting impression on those who knew her.
Mrs. Thomas was known for her work at Jakes in Charlotte, where she earned the distinction of “waitress of the year,” an honor that reflected both her dedication and the genuine way she connected with people. That recognition stood among her proudest accomplishments and spoke to the care she brought to her work each day.
Beyond her career, Jean found joy in life’s simple and beautiful pleasures. She loved flowers and enjoyed watching the activity at her bird feeders. She also enjoyed cruises and dancing, embracing opportunities for fun and fellowship. Those who knew her will remember her great sense of humor and wit, as well as the huge heart that guided the way she lived. She loved helping her neighbors and those in need, and her kindness was felt in many quiet, meaningful ways.
Family was an important part of Jean's life. She is survived by her daughter, Deborah Bradley; her brother, Earl Richard Gassaway; her step-sons, Doug Thomas(Martha), Philip Thomas(Jolette), and Bennit Thomas(Kim); and Kim Bradley, her angel caretaker, whose care and presence were a special comfort. Jean was also blessed with 10 grandchildren and a host of great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Thomas; her parents, Bernice Gassaway and Florence Gassaway; and her son-in-law, Jerry Bradley. May her memory bring comfort to those who loved her and continue to inspire the same kindness, humor, and generosity she shared so freely.
