Barbara Lee Barnhardt
Moss
Mar 20, 1946 — Jul 19, 2026
Kannapolis, NC
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, whose kindness, strength, and generous spirit touched the lives of so many. Barbara Lee Barnhardt Moss, 80, of Kannapolis, passed away after several years of declining health on Sunday, July 19, 2026, at Liberty Commons Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of Rowan County.
Barbara was born March 20, 1946, in Cabarrus County, North Carolina to the late Floyd Walter Barnhardt and the late Mattie Lee Gulledge Barnhardt. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Leonard Nolan Moss, Jr.
Survivors include daughters, Amy Moss Steele (Kevin) of Davidson and Erin Strawder (Garrett) of Davidson; grandchildren, Clay Harkey (Karley), Xander Corriher (fiancé Hannah), and Alayna Harkey; great-grandchild due in December, Nolan Reid Harkey; and siblings, Betty Sechler (the late Lynn D. Sechler Sr.) of Kannapolis and Floyd Michael Barnhardt (Judy) of Salisbury. Many nieces and nephews are left to cherish her memory.
Barbara was a 1964 graduate of Winecoff High School. She dedicated much of her life to the art of cosmetology. Barbara was a talented and skilled cosmetologist who owned her own salon early in her career. Her gift evolved into a passion for teaching others those same skills. Through hard work, determination and 20 plus years in the beauty industry, she earned her Associate’s Degree and went on to become a respected cosmetology instructor, sharing her knowledge with future generations of beauty professionals. Beyond just developing other cosmetologists, she touched the hearts and lives of many of her students to the point of being known as “Momma Moss”. She was compassionate, caring, yet held a standard of excellence and many came through her class knowing that they were not only taught well, but cared for. She was dearly loved by her cosmetology family and students. Barbara created not only beautiful hairstyles but lasting friendships with the many people whose lives she touched.
While she found great fulfillment in her career, her greatest joy was always her family. She loved her grandchildren beyond measure. Her favorite place was the beach, with her toes in the sand watching the ocean. She had a deep appreciation for her church, her Pastor and his family, whom she truly loved. The church's kindness and support brought her such comfort and peace, especially during life’s most difficult moments. She also had a special place in her heart for her beloved dogs, who brought her endless comfort and companionship.
Above all, she was a devoted mother who always put her children first. From cheerleading coach, endless dance competitions, career management, to a loving grandmother, she was by their side from childhood until her death. She never hesitated to offer her love, guidance, and support. Her selflessness, compassion, and unwavering love will continue to inspire all who knew her.
Though our hearts are broken by her passing, we find comfort in knowing she is with her savior, Jesus Christ and the love of her life, her husband Nolan. She leaves behind countless memories and a lasting impact made on her family, friends, students, clients, and everyone fortunate enough to know her. Her love and giving spirit will never be forgotten and will live on in all the hearts of those who loved her.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 PM until 1:45 PM on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at Bible Missionary Baptist Church, 11360 Old Concord Rd, Rockwell. The funeral service will follow on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Bible Missionary Baptist Church in Rockwell officiated by Pastor Cody Zorn.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to RCCC Cosmetology Program.
