Barbara Ellen Riggs Barnhardt, 76, of Rockwell, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 9, 2026.
Barbara was born on February 1, 1950 in Pamlico County. She was a cherished daughter of the late John D. Riggs Sr. and Lois May Buck Riggs. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Richard Barnhardt.
Barbara was born at the beach; the ocean always held a special place in her heart. Though she came to love the beauty of the mountains, she never lost her connection to the sea. She enjoyed gardening and took great pride in her beautiful flower garden, and she loved spending time fishing and enjoying nature.
Barbara had a deep love for animals, especially cats, and at one time raised Ragdoll cats. Her beloved Chihuahuas—Faith, Doc, and Ladybug were constant companions who brought her so much happiness.
Barbara will be remembered as a beautiful person inside and out, and as a wonderful and devoted mother. Her kindness, love, and gentle spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband, Tony Barnhardt; daughters, Dana Poole (Lacy) and Tamara Bradshaw (Bucky); grandchildren, Andrew and Michael Hunnicutt; one great grandchild; brother, John D. Riggs, Jr. (Linda); sister Lori Duzan; Barbara was also blessed with numerous loving nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 12:00pm to 1:00pm on Saturday, March 21, 2026 at Whitley’s Funeral Home in Kannapolis. The memorial service will follow the visitation beginning at 1:00pm with Rev. Keith Furguson officiating.
