From: Mike, Barbara, Robbie and Katie Messick
"Steve was an amazing neighbor and friend. From the day he met us, he and Sheila welcomed us and made us feel so at home. Mike traveled for Nascar as I was home, in a new state and without family around with two small kids. Steve and Sheila were always there for me when I needed ANYTHING. I remember when Robbie has his toe cut almost clearly off at the opening of the YMCA at Afton in Concord, I had Katie who was under a year old and Robbie screaming and bleeding at 2 years old. The YMCA wouldn't call 911 so I hustled two kids into our truck and went back home where Steve was there to take Katie and watch her as I ran Robbie to a doctor for stitches. I don't know what I would have done without the neighbors and people they were to us, always looking out after the kids and I when Mike was gone and when Mike was home. We all have never forgotten the many times we shared...between birthdays, stories, and all. They made my living in NC so much better than it could have been while having two small kids and a husband that traveled. He treated my kids as though they were his own, so many times. We moved to Kannapolis in 2005 and though we didn't lose touch, we did miss seeing one another...we were able to meet for a dinner here and there, then life took over for the both of us...From day one of hearing of Steve's Cancer, we have prayed for him, thought of all of the family and continued to hope to hear better news then this. Shelia we know how much you loved him and know that your heart is broken as well as Candace, Brandon and Mariah's too. We know his grandkids will miss out on all the great things he would have done for them as well as the love he had for them. We are continuing the prayers for all of you for the strength in the coming days, weeks and months. We know Heaven is once again blessed with another angel, though saying this right now probably doesn't ease the pain felt today. We love you guys! Always have...and will never, ever, forget those days on Fieldcrest Court!"
