Howard Alvis Smith, Jr., 81, of Kannapolis passed away Sept 12, 2018. He was born January 17, 1937 in Madison County, GA., a son of the late Howard Alvis Smith Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Fortson Smith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Ann Dowell Smith in 2016.

Howard was an electronics repairman for many years working for several businesses. He was an avid guitar player. He enjoyed gardening, going to the mountains and studying his Bible.

A service will be held at 1:00 PM at Whitley’s Funeral Home officiated by Pastor Tim Barnette. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior from 12:30 to 1:00 PM.

He is survived by his daughter, Teresa S. Freeman (Todd) of Concord, 4 sons, Howard A. Smith III of Kannapolis, Samuel Dion Smith of China Grove, Paul Tyrone Smith (Denise) of Rockwell, Timothy Wade Smith of Honolulu, HI., brother, Flavel David Smith, two sisters, Zadie Pettigrew and Dee Vernon, 11 grandchildren, 12 great- grandchildren and several great- great grandchildren.

"Classmate of Dee Vernon and Sister in law Shirley Smith and husband Flavel. Howard Sr. I called him (POP) would take Dee and I to Brown Football Games to watch (the late) Gerald play football...These siblings had wonderful Godly parents..and I have loved all this family for years...It saddens me to learn of another sibling to pass away..but the realization that it is not goodby but so long for now...is God's way of giving us comfort when a loved one passes..I will pray for all of you, Flavel and Shirley, Zadie, Dee and "Daddy" and Dawn but know you have family waiting for you just inside the Eastern Gate."
